Ella Bella’s Turkey Siomai (Dimsum)

Siomai is a popular snack, not just in China, but also in several parts of Asia, including my home country, the Philippines.

In true Pinoy fashion, we don’t only eat these as snack, but we make a meal out of them by eating them with warm rice 🙂

I can’t remember the last time I had some so this week, it just had to go in my week’s menu. As long as you have the ability to steam, then I would recommend you try these out soon!


1.3 lbs Shady Brook Farms – All-Natural Fresh Ground Turkey (85/15)

½ cup Sliced Baby Bella Mushrooms, sliced finely or ground using a food processor

1 cup Carrots-Julienne Cut, sliced finely or ground using a food processor

¼ cup yellow onion, sliced finely or ground using a food processor

1 tsp garlic salt (or sea salt)

½ teaspoon black pepper

2 gloves garlic, chopped finely

20 dumpling wrappers

In a medium or large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients (except the dumpling wrappers) until everything is well incorporated. Cover the bowl and chill the mixture for at least an hour. You can skip the chilling part but this is advised if you want the flavors to be richer.

Once chilled, put in about 2 tbsps of the mixture into a dumpling wrapper. Leave the top unwrapped as shown in the picture. Repeat the process until you have all dumplings ready. Brush the bottom of the steamer (where you will place the dumplings) with just enough vegetable oil. Steam dumplings for 18 to 20 minutes.

I usually steam them in batches and wait until they’re ready to be eaten. If you refrigerate your ready-made dumplings, the mixture would seem to darken a bit because of the mushroom’s discoloration but such shouldn’t be a problem.

For the sauce, I love the classic mixture of soy sauce, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and fried garlic. You can adjust the amount of these 4 ingredients according to your taste preference. I also use light soy sauce, obviously, to make it a little lighter 😉
